Bryan Kohberger, the man accused of killing four University of Idaho students, has now pleaded guilty to the murder charges leveled against him.
The Daily Mail reports that Kohberger reached a plea deal with prosecutors that will prevent him from receiving the death penalty.
As we will see, the plea deal has garnered significant controversy. Some of the victims’ families have already come out publicly against it. It has left many wondering why the prosecution agreed to it, considering all of the evidence that it had against Kohberger.

He’s guilty?
The guilty plea did come as somewhat of a surprise, considering that, for months, Kohberger’s defense team vehemently claimed that he was innocent.
The plea deal came just weeks before the trial was set to begin.
The Daily Mail reports:
Kohberger will no longer face the possibility of being put to death by firing squad. The callous killer calmly answered ‘yes’ multiple times when asked if he willingly murdered Mogen, Kernodle, Goncalves, and Chapin two and a half years ago.
Indeed, you can see that in the above video.
Now, Kohberger is scheduled to be sentenced starting on July 23. Many are expecting him to get a life sentence without the possibility of parole. At the sentencing hearing, the victims’ families will make statements.
The backlash
The New York Post reports that prosecutors in the case are facing a significant backlash for going forward with this plea deal.
Per the outlet:
People enraged at Bryan Kohberger’s plea deal — allowing him to duck the death penalty for the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students — vented their frustration by leaving 1-star reviews on the prosecutors’ Google listing. “Horrible Horrible people work here!! They all need to be fired for what they did, no justice for any of the 4 college students,” one reviewer fumed on the listing for the Latah County Prosecuting Attorney.
Some of the victims’ families have also publicly come out against the deal. This includes the family of Kaylee Goncalves.
ABC News reports:
The father of University of Idaho murder victim Kaylee Goncalves is blasting the plea deal offered to Bryan Kohberger, accusing the prosecutors of mishandling and rushing the deal. “We were not prepared for this — we had no idea that this was going to happen,” Steve Goncalves told ABC News hours after the plea deal was announced.
Goncalves went on to argue that prosecutors should have at least conditioned the plea deal on a full confession. Now, however, it appears that Kohberger is off the hook — both in terms of the death penalty and of having to provide a detailed allocution.
