Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell will speak Tuesday morning from the European Central Bank’s annual retreat in Portugal as he faces heavy criticism from President Trump and the White House over the lack of interest rate cuts in recent months.
While Powell has highlighted the volatility of markets following Trump’s tariff rollout and unrest in the Middle East, the president has threatened to remove him as Fed chief.
Names of who could lead the nation’s central bank should Powell be dismissed have started to emerge, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
During the retreat Tuesday, Powell will be joined by economic leaders from the European Union, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom.
