One of Donald Trump’s first orders as president was to end DEI in this country.
Since taking over, he has removed DEI officials, and we have seen the influence in outside organizations as well, with the president of the University of Virginia being the latest to fall.
The Order
Donald Trump hit the ground running on January 20, 2025, issuing a slew of executive orders to start the second term of his presidency.
One of the orders was titled, “Ending Radical And Wasteful Government DEI Programs And Preferencing.”
The order, in part, stated, “Pursuant to Executive Order 13985 and follow-on orders, nearly every Federal agency and entity submitted ‘Equity Action Plans’ to detail the ways that they have furthered DEIs infiltration of the Federal Government.
“The public release of these plans demonstrated immense public waste and shameful discrimination. That ends today. Americans deserve a government committed to serving every person with equal dignity and respect, and to expending precious taxpayer resources only on making America great.
You’re Fired
That order started a chain reaction in our government, as Trump looked to have anyone with DEI ties removed from government service.
One of the first to go was US Archivist Colleen Shogan, who was a thorn in Trump’s side regarding the classified documents investigation. She hammered Trump while coddling Joe Biden, so this was clearly someone Trump wanted gone sooner rather than later.
Trump also offered separation packages, generous ones at that, for officials who wanted to run now rather than face the wrath of his ax as DOGE and Trump started to downsize government staff.
The biggest name to fall, however, was, in my opinion, General Mark Milley, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who both spoke out against Trump as well as allowing DEI to seep into our military.
He’s Gone
University of Virginia President James Ryan is the latest to fall after being told he was the subject of an investigation by the DOJ over the school’s DEI policies.
Upon submitting his resignation, Ryan stated, “I am writing, with a very heavy heart, to let you know that I have submitted my resignation as President of the University of Virginia.
“To make a long story short, I am inclined to fight for what I believe in, and I believe deeply in this University. But I cannot make a unilateral decision to fight the federal government in order to save my own job.”
I firmly believe we are beyond the time in this country where policies like DEI should be in place. We are now on a level playing field, and opportunity should be on merit, not because a particular box was checked on an application. Private companies, if they decide to go down this route, putting their company at risk, that is on them, but when it comes to education, the government, our military, and first responders, it has to be about more than just checking off the right boxes. It has to be about ability, period.
