The House Oversight Committee has intensified its investigation into former President Joe Biden’s cognitive fitness by issuing a subpoena to Anthony Bernal, a former top aide to ex-First Lady Jill Biden.
CBS News reported that the subpoena was issued as part of a broader inquiry led by Republicans to assess whether Biden’s executive actions may not be valid due to alleged mental incapacities.
On Thursday, committee chairman James Comer announced that Bernal is required to provide a deposition on July 16.
This move marks a significant moment in the ongoing investigation, as previous negotiations with Bernal’s legal representatives failed to secure a voluntary interview.
Subpoena Part of Larger Investigation
The subpoena directed at Bernal is a component of a more extensive investigation actively supported by President Donald Trump. An overarching theme of this inquiry is the scrutiny of decisions and actions taken during Biden’s tenure.
Among the points under examination are former President Biden’s use of the autopen for pardoning individuals and signing official documents. Dr. Kevin O’Connor, who served as Biden’s physician, has also been called to testify on July 9.
Former President Trump has waived executive privilege for eight of Biden’s previous officials, including Bernal, enabling them to testify without hesitation about confidentiality or privilege.
Comer’s subpoena appears to reflect Republican apprehensions over whether pivotal executive decisions made by Biden were executed without full cognitive awareness. These concerns are at the heart of the investigation.
Some former officials have already testified, including the insights shared by Neera Tanden. More depositions are anticipated from other aides who served under Biden’s administration.
In reaction to the ongoing committee activities, critics have labeled the investigation a partisan diversion, suggesting it detracts from pressing policy discussions.
Debates Surrounding Legal Reversals
The legal implications of any inquiry finding are under considerable debate. One potential outcome could be the possible reconsideration of actions performed by Biden if claims of incapacity are substantiated.
Commenting in defense, “I made the decisions during my presidency,” Biden stated, highlighting the integrity of his choices and intentions behind executive orders, including those pertaining to pardons.
Accusations from Comer reached social media platforms, as he criticized Bernal for avoiding testimony by stating he was “running scared,” particularly after the executive privilege was lifted.
Various political figures have voiced their opinions, including Rep. Wesley Bell, who criticized the probe as an “extraordinary waste of time,” condemning the lack of substantial evidence thus far uncovered.
Despite the criticism, Comer remains firm. His social media statement underscored his resolve: “We will stop at nothing to expose the truth about Joe Biden’s decline” and “unauthorized use of the autopen.”
