A 22-year-old Alabama police officer was arrested at a Disney resort in Florida this week after allegedly kidnapping a man during a bizarre off-duty incident that began at a house party in Mississippi.
David Cunningham, a cop from Mobile, Alabama, was taken into custody on Tuesday, June 3, by Orange County deputies after a warrant for his arrest was issued in connection to a May 24 incident in Harrison County, Mississippi. He is facing one felony count of kidnapping, according to public arrest records and multiple reports.
The strange series of events reportedly started when Cunningham, who serves with the Prichard Police Department, attended a house party in Mississippi. There, a 21-year-old man allegedly shot a dog during what local officials called a “recreational gunfire” display. But instead of waiting for local authorities, Cunningham — who had no jurisdiction in Mississippi — handcuffed the man and put him in the back of his patrol car.
He then drove off with the man still in custody. According to the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, he was pulled over shortly after and was found to be carrying his badge and department-issued weapon.
At the time, he wasn’t arrested. But after further review, the sheriff’s office determined Cunningham had unlawfully detained the man, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Officials also charged Kristin Allen, a passenger riding with Cunningham that night, with allegedly providing conflicting accounts of the incident to investigators and interfering with the investigation.
Allen turned herself in to Mississippi authorities on June 2. Cunningham was located and arrested the following day at a Disney resort in Florida, where he had apparently been vacationing.
The Prichard Police Department released a statement acknowledging Cunningham’s arrest and said he was operating a city police vehicle out of state at the time — a potential violation of department policy. The department has since opened an internal investigation.
“We are committed to ensuring full accountability and transparency throughout the process,” the statement read.
Cunningham is being held in Florida on $500,000 bond and is awaiting extradition to Mississippi, according to WJTV.
