A 21-year-old man from Oak Hill, West Virginia, is behind bars after allegedly beating his pregnant girlfriend and abandoning her in a wooded area, thinking she was dead.
According to local outlets WCHS, WV MetroNews, and WSAZ, Logan Willis called 911 from a gas station in rural Kenna on Friday afternoon, June 6, and told dispatchers that he believed he had killed his girlfriend. Shockingly, their young child was with him at the time of the call.
“In his own words, he ‘beat her until she quit breathing,’” Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger told WCHS.
Authorities launched a search and followed a blood trail from the road into a nearby wooded area, where they found the woman still alive. Investigators say Willis assaulted her inside his car before dragging her into the woods and leaving her there.
It wasn’t until deputies reached her that they realized she was pregnant.
“She had numerous serious injuries consistent with a life-altering beating,” the sheriff said, citing a criminal complaint obtained by WSAZ. “It’s as much about making sure the baby survives as her.”
The woman was rushed to CAMC General Hospital, where she remained in extremely critical condition as of Friday evening.
Willis was arrested and arraigned in Jackson County Magistrate Court the same day. He faces charges of attempted homicide, malicious assault, and strangulation. Jail records show he is being held on a $500,000 bond.
