President Donald Trump has had a rather interesting week.
He has had a massive and very public feud with Elon Musk, but he has also had to deal with the trade issues related to China.
Between social media posts about Elon, Trump found the time to call Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss the ongoing trade situation between the U.S. and China, and it is now being reported that the two men will meet in person to discuss the matter.
Let’s chat
This all got started after a late-night posting session by Trump, who expressed frustration with a 2 a.m. statement about Xi.
Early Wednesday, Trump posted, “I like President XI of China, always have, and always will, but he is VERY TOUGH, AND EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE A DEAL WITH!!!”
I am sure Democrats will jump all over the fact that Trump posted about liking a dictator, but I digress.
According to China, the White House then requested a call between Xi and Trump, an ask which was apparently granted.
The call reportedly took place around 9 a.m. on Thursday, which is about an hour before the White House would be open for business under former President Joe Biden, but again, I digress.
Around 11 a.m., and apparently right after getting off the phone with Xi, Trump posted on Truth Social that he was happy with the call and an in-person meeting with representatives between both countries would be scheduled very soon.
I have stated in previous reports that I thought these two would come together as long as they could both leave the bargaining table saving face.
Neither president is going to want to appear to be the one who caved, so this is not going to be an easy deal to negotiate or execute because one wrong move could put everything in jeopardy.
But, as I have also stated, both countries need each other at this point. Sadly, the United States has become far too dependent on Chinese goods, and the Chinese are reliant on the American consumer dollar, as was made quite apparent after the tariffs were put in place and reports surfaced that more than 15,000 Chinese workers had been laid off.
I think they will get this done soon, but both men are going to have to check their egos at the door.
I think they will be able to make a deal that will allow both sides to claim victory, which is the only way this gets settled fast. Again, if they check their egos, this will be fine. If not, the standoff will continue, and the tariffs will stay in place.
