The phenomenon of squatting got national attention last month after a New York woman was arrested for trying to evict people who had taken over her home.
While squatting has been defended by some on the left, Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman recently made clear that he isn’t on board with that.
“I am not woke”
“Squatters have no rights,” the freshman lawmaker was quoted as saying during an interview with the New York Post this week.
“How can you even pretend that this is anything other than you’re just breaking the law?” Fetterman demanded before adding, “I am not woke.”
The senator added that he confronted the problem of squatting during his tenure as mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, stating, “We always tried to push back against that.”
“It’s wild that if you go away on a long trip, for 30 days, and someone breaks into your home and suddenly they have rights,” he continued.
“This is crazy,” the Democrat complained before adding, “Like if somebody stole your car, and then they held it for 30 days, then somehow you now have some rights?”
“We have to be very smart and aggressive on crime”
Fetterman also weighed in on the killing of NYPD Detective Jonathan Diller, who was allegedly murdered by a man with at least 21 prior arrests.
“If you have those kinds of established records, it doesn’t serve any greater goal to allow people that are offending, offending, offending and allow them to not be held accountable,” Fetterman remarked. “We have to be very smart and aggressive on crime.”
Later, Fetterman took issue with those in his party who have called for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s removal from office.
“It’s reasonable if you want to criticize, but to call for effectively like a regime change, I disagree,” he stated. “I didn’t agree because Israel is a democracy, it is our key special ally. And our nation wouldn’t appreciate any kind of foreign input.”
Fetterman says Bob Menendez is a “sleazeball”
This is not the first time Fetterman has publicly broken with other Democrats, as in March he told CNN host Manu Raju that New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez is a “sleazeball” who needs to go.
Sen John Fetterman (D-PA) to CNN’s @mkraju on Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ):
“He’s got to go … And that arrogance, where he’s now saying, ‘I’m not going anywhere’ — it’s like, my dude, you are going somewhere. It’s going to be an election or it’s going to be a conviction.” pic.twitter.com/Eo6YmYsjzP

The Department of Justice indicted Menendez last fall along with his wife, Nadine Menendez, and co-defendants Fred Daibes and Jose Uribe on bribery and corruption charges.
Federal authorities say that FBI agents discovered nearly $480,000 in cash at Menendez’s home along with $100,000 worth of gold bars.
