Republicans received a major boost in the race to keep Rep. Nancy Mace‘s (R-SC) seat red after a federal court ruled in favor of a redistricting map favorable to the GOP.
Though the court originally ruled that Mace’s district had been racially gerrymandered, it decided Thursday that the district could stay in place for the 2024 election. The three-judge panel took up the case after the Supreme Court took too long, ruling that although the situation was not ideal, a decision had to be made before the state primary.
“Having found that Congressional District No. 1 constitutes an unconstitutional racial gerrymander, the Court fully recognizes that ‘it would be the unusual case in which a court would be justified in not taking appropriate action to insure that no further elections are conducted under an invalid plan,’” the five-page ruling reads.
The three judges, who were all appointed by Democrat presidents, wrote, “But with the primary election procedures rapidly approaching, the appeal before the Supreme Court still pending, and no remedial plan in place, the ideal must bend to the practical.”
Mace announced in a social media post Thursday morning, “I work 7 days a week to deliver results for the Lowcountry, and I promise no one will work harder. Serving the Lowcountry is the honor of my lifetime. Today we filed for re-election!”
