A ring camera caught a Florida pre-med student holding a knife before he allegedly stabbed his mother to death Saturday, WFLA reported.
Emmanuel Espinoza, a 21-year-old pre-med student at the University of Florida, stands accused of murdering his mother, Elvia Espinoza, 46, over the suspect’s frustration with the victim, according to WFLA. Police arrested and charged with him first-degree murder.
“Mom called on Saturday morning and said Manny [the suspect’s nickname] I haven’t seen you in a while. I want to come up to Gainesville to see you,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said Monday, WFLA reported. “He said ‘Well, mom I’m visiting grandfather this weekend, he has an event so I’ll be down your way.’ She said, ‘That’s great. Why don’t you stay with me at the house?’ And he said, ‘Sure, I’d love to.’”
“The second she opened the door, he charged in and started stabbing her,” Judd said. “He made the statement that he knew where to stab her for maximum effect because of his biology classes.”
The affidavit noted that the defendant was well aware that stabbing his mother near the heart would be fatal. However, detectives found she had been stabbed all over her body, WFLA reported. The sheriff also mentioned that the suspect allegedly continued to stab his mother more than 70 times as she resisted, and then proceeded to stab her again after noticing movements.
“He said he noticed her hands were still moving, so he stabbed her some more. And then he told the detectives in his confession that he had cut his hand on the knife while stabbing his mother. And as he is standing at the kitchen sink, washing himself off and the knife, he wanted to ask his mom for the Neosporin, for the cut on his hand, but he noticed she was dead,” Judd said, according to WFLA.
After the attack, the suspect called 911 to say he killed his mother. Deputies arrived to find the suspect covered in blood, saying he killed his mother because she annoyed him. Despite claiming to love her, the suspect admitted he had thought about killing her for years, WFLA stated.
