More horrific details have emerged following a series of stabbings in New York City on Friday that left one man dead.
A new report reveals the dying words of Davide Giri, a 30-year-old Columbia University graduate student who had just arrived in the city before being fatally stabbed Friday night, according to the New York Post.
According to the Post, after being “after being fatally knifed in the gut,” Giri yelled, “Help, I have been stabbed,” and tried to run away before collapsing on the ground.
Giri was subsequently taken to the hospital, where he died.
Attacks in the Big Apple
The Post reported earlier that at least two people had been stabbed in apparently random attacks believed to have been perpetrated by the same individual. Both attacks were captured on camera.
Giri, for his part, was approached by the suspect around 11 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Amsterdam Avenue and 123rd Street. Surveillance footage reportedly shows a man in a red hoodie approaching the student from behind before stabbing him. It also shows the moments after the attack.
Roughly 15 minutes later, a man identified as a tourist and scholar from Italy scholar was also stabbed, and video footage showed an individual wearing the same red hoodie was behind the attack. The attacker approached his victim and stabbed him multiple times in the back and torso, puncturing the man’s internal organs. The man is reportedly expected to survive.
Giri’s cause of death was reported to have been a puncture wound to his vena cava, one of the large veins that takes a significant amount of blood to the heart.
Police make arrest
Police have arrested 25-year-old Vincent Pinkney in connection with the attacks, the Post reports.
Police have said Pinkney has ties to street gangs and has a lengthy rap sheet that reportedly includes 11 arrests dating back to 2012. The charges include a conviction for a gang-type attack on a man in Jamaica that occurred in 2013. He served less than three years for that incident.
What motivated Pinkney to carry out Friday’s attacks remains unclear.
Pinkney is now being held without bond, the Post reports. He is facing murder, attempted murder, and assault charges.
