Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) slammed the Biden administration’s refusal to “cancel” student debt during a floor statement on Thursday.
According to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Student loans are “ridiculous.”
In a speech on the House floor, Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) rallied against “crushing” student loan debt and called on President Joe Biden to cancel student loans.
Here’s what Ocasio-Cortez said on the House floor Thursday:
“I’m greatly looking forward to the Biden administration canceling student debt and no longer advancing the false narratives that student-loan debt is for the privileged, What a ridiculous assertion. Do we really think that a billionaire’s child is taking student loans? Come on.”
Ocasio-Cortez, among other Democrats, is continuing to pressure Biden to make moves on more widespread student loan debt forgiveness. Pushing Biden to end the $1.7 trillion student debt crisis and forgive student loans for 45 million Americans.
However, Pelosi disagreed with the premise that Biden can unilaterally cancel student debt.
During a press conference, Pelosi remarked “People think that the president of the United States has the power for debt forgiveness, He does not. He can postpone, he can delay, but he does not have that power. That has to be an act of Congress.”
But other Democrats quickly voiced disagreement with Pelosi.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) tweeted, “Suppose your child did not want to go fight countless and endless shadow wars across the globe, at this time, but you’re paying taxes to fund all of that.” In a remark, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) retweeted and captioned “You may not be happy about it!”

Ocasio-Cortez implored Biden to reconsider student debt forgiveness — which, according to the White House, requires an act of Congress, as recorded by Fox Business.
Ocasio-Cortez argued, “It’s teenagers signing up for what is often hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt. We just do that. Our government allows that,We give 17-year-olds the ability to sign on and sign up for $100,000 worth of debt and we think that’s responsible policy.”
Though Biden has refused to unilaterally forgive student debt, he extended the moratorium on payments for Department of Education loans until 2022 following pressure from the progressive faction of his party.
