De Blasio sparks outrage after extending vax mandate to NYC’s private and parochial schools

As he enters his final month of office until the new mayor takes over, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) did his best to tick off tens of thousands of additional New Yorkers by making yet another ridiculous decision with regard to COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

According to the New York Post, de Blasio made the asinine decision to extend the city’s COVID-19 vaccination mandates to teachers and employees of all New York City private and parochial schools, including yeshivas and Catholic schools – a decision that sparked immediate outrage.

Under the new extension, employees that fall into the new categories of workers that must be vaccinated will have until Dec. 20 to comply with the mayor’s orders.

In total, the extension affects some 938 private and religious schools, and a staggering 56,000 employees.

“Under attack”

The backlash to de Blasio’s knee-jerk vaccine mandate extension was swift and fierce, with many school staffers around the city speaking up.

“There is going to be a lot of opposition to this, there is no doubt about it,” a staffer at a Borough Park yeshiva told The Post. “A lot of us felt under attack already. This is going to continue that feeling.”

That same worker also told the outlet that a vast majority of staffers at the city’s various yeshivas — otherwise known as Orthodox Jewish schools — are unvaccinated and have no plans of reversing that decision. Some schools reportedly do not have even one employee vaccinated.

“How are they going to come in and enforce this?” the unnamed yeshiva staffer asked. “That’s the question.”

Taking away choice

Thomas Chadzutko, the Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Brooklyn, told The Post that roughly 88% of teachers and staff in his system are vaccinated.

He added that while he and most others support vaccines in general, there should still be an individual choice involved at this point in the pandemic.

But as bad as de Blasio’s announcement was, it could soon become much worse, as the incoming Mayor-elect Eric Adams, a Democrat, indicated last year that he would consider forcing every student to receive a vaccination, pending approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“We already have a system in place that states before you start school you receive your vaccination. It is to protect the child and the student population. We saw historically what happens when you have an outbreak of a certain type of illness that takes place that you can prevent even from polio,” Adams said in October, according to a previous report from The Post.
