Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson revealed his regrets about openly endorsing President Joe Biden in the 2020 election.
Speaking with “Fox & Friends Weekend” host Will Cain, the WWE superstar and actor was clear that he’s not looking to add to the division in the country and will keep his politics close to the vest in the future.
The political topic and his thoughts about the current state of the nation came as Johnson told Cain it was important for him to be “real” and “transparent,” recalling his struggles with his own fame.
“It took me some time to recognize that. In a way, I was averse to fame and I didn’t understand the power of it, how it could swing both ways. Finally, as I got down the road a little bit and started achieving notoriety… I start to realize, this is a superpower, that fame is a superpower, when used correctly, I believe, also to influence people and in terms of being direct and honest,” he said on the “The Will Cain Show” on location at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
Cain used the comments to jump off to Johnson’s use of his fame to announce his support for the 2020 Biden-Harris ticket publicly.
“Are you happy that you made that endorsement in 2020? Are you happy with the state of America?” he asked the 51-year-old professional wrestler.
“Am I happy with the state of America right now? Well, that answer’s no. Do I believe we are going to get better? I believe in that, I’m an optimistic guy and I believe we can get better,” Johnson replied.
He then addressed his 2020 endorsement.
“I’ve never publicly endorsed a presidential candidate or vice presidential candidate in my life,” he said at the time in a filmed virtual conversation. “So let’s kick this conversation off this way by me officially publicly endorsing you both to become President and Vice President of our great country.”
“The endorsement that I made years ago with Biden was one I thought was the best decision for me at that time,” Johnson told Cain, explaining that he thought at the time it was his “job” to use his influence to share who he was supporting for office.
“Am I going to do that again this year? That answer’s no, I’m not going to do that,” he said. “What I also realized, what that caused back then was something that tears me up in my guts back then and now, which is division. That got me.”
“The takeaway after that, months and months and months, I started to realize, oh man, that caused an incredible amount of division in our country,” Johnson continued.
“I realize now going into this election, I’m not gonna do that…my goal is to bring this country together,” he added. “In the spirit of that, there’s gonna be no endorsement, not that I’m afraid of it at all. It’s just I realize, this level of influence, I will keep my politics to myself. I think it’s between me and the ballot box…Like a lot of us out there, not trusting of all politicians, I do trust the American people and I trust that whoever they vote for, that is my president and who I will support 100 percent.”
Cain eventually broached the subject of Johnson running for president himself, which prompted the actor to pour another glass of his own Teremana Tequila, laughing that he knew the question was coming.
“As of now, no” he answered seriously, adding, “I’m not a politician. I’m not into politics.”
Emphasizing that he has no current interest in running for office, Johnson pointed to the importance of being there for his children and family and the realization that a political life would take him away from that.
