The majority of gender-confused children grow out of that feeling by the time they are fully grown adults, according to a long-term study.
Researchers in the Netherlands tracked more than 2,700 children from age 11 to their mid-twenties, asking them every three years of feelings about their gender.
Results showed at the start of the research, around one-in-10 children (11 percent) expressed ‘gender non-contentedness’ to varying degrees.
By the time the participants of the study reached age 25, only one-in-25 (4 percent) said they ‘often’ or ‘sometimes’ were discontent with their gender.
The conclusion statement of the study reads:
The results of the current study might help adolescents to realize that it is normal to have some doubts about one’s identity and one’s gender identity during this age period and that this is also relatively common. Furthermore, the insight that gender non-contentedness is relatively common during early adolescence in a general population and youth psychiatric care sample, might provide some perspective to clinicians primarily seeing individuals with intense gender dysphoric feelings and give them a more comprehensive view on the range of developmental patterns of gender identity in the general population and in children receiving youth psychiatric care.
In summary, having the wish to be of the opposite sex is relatively common in this combined general population and clinical sample. Our data indicate associations between experiencing gender non-contentedness and a poorer self-concept and mental health throughout adolescence.

Journalist Ian Miles Cheong shared a screenshot of the report and wrote, “The vast majority of gender-confused or “gender-questioning” children grow out of it, according to a 15-year longitudinal study conducted in the Netherlands, which tracked more than 2,700 children from the age of 11 to their mid-20s.”
“Being transgender is a trend — it’s a phase some kids go through and eventually grow out, including those who undergo irreversible surgeries. The surgeries, the treatments, the therapies all need to stop. Immediately,” Cheong added.
X owner Elon Musk replied, “I’m cool with adults doing whatever they want, so long as it doesn’t harm others, but kids need to be protected at all costs.”

TransgenderTrend, a leading UK organization calling for evidence-based care for gender dysphoric children, commented on the study, writing, “Largest study to date confirms what we know: puberty is difficult but adolescent distress & confusion dissipates with time. By the time they’re in their mid-twenties, the vast majority no longer wish to be the opposite sex. Growing up solves the problem.”
