One of the principles of our founding was “equal justice under the law”. This means everybody has an equal opportunity in the court room. The Lady Justice statue outside the Supreme Court has a blindfold and carries a scale, a symbol of impartiality. The judge in charge of this Trump trial has at least one conflict of interest, throwing impartiality out the window. Judge Juan Merchan is not neutral and that’s necessary.
Democrat donor conflict
Judge Merchan’s daughter is raising money, over $93 million, for Democrats through her firm using this case as a pitch. Ms. Merchan worked for Vice President Kamala Harris and is currently the president of Authentic Campaigns, a liberal fund raising firm based in Chicago. Adam Schiff is one of Authentic Campaign’s clients.
Schiff raised over $20 million since Trump’s indictment. Senate Majority PAC, another client of Authentic Campaigns, raised a lot more to the tune of $73 million.
Democrats are campaigning off the law fare being raged over Trump. It’s an immediate family member of the judge that presents one huge conflict of interest. Judge Merchan went out of his way to donate to Biden in 2020. Allowing this to continue erodes credibility in America’s foundation of law.
Campaign conflict
Judge Merchan “examined his conscience” and said he could be impartial. Nobody believes you, judge. If his own daughter is profiting handsomely off this, there’s no trust the judge can be impartial. If this isn’t a conflict of interest, what would be?
There’s more than one case against Trump that presents the same problem. Fani Willis in Georgia hired her lover, Nathan Wade, to manage the Trump prosecution even though he doesn’t have experience doing this.
She got a kickback for hiring him. Wade takes her on luxurious vacations with the taxpayer money that paid him through the Fulton Country District Attorney’s office. Special Prosecutor Jack Smith was allowed to use the full force of the Department of Justice to deliberately schedule court dates to conflict with the election.
Witch hunts
Trump labeled them well. You see this over reach of power in corrupt foreign authoritarian regimes. They weren’t supposed to happen here, it’s a constitutional republic. Public officials continue down this road without consequences so the rule of law means nothing.
When the justice system is weaponized to attack your political opponent to maintain power, there is no justice anymore. Judge Merchan should have stepped down.
He won’t because that will throw the trial schedule into a mess. Trump wants postponement. So understandably, the Manhattan DA sees no reason to encourage Merchan to recuse himself.
