Organizers have called off the 2024 Ruth Bader Ginsburg Leadership Award after the family of the deceased Supreme Court justice threw a hissy fit over some of the honorees.
The Dwight D. Opperman Foundation which has sponsored the event to honor the judicial icon backed out of this year’s edition after receiving fierce criticism over the decision to recognize individuals who are despised by leftists, specifically Fox News founder Rupert Murdoch and X owner Elon Musk.
An insult to the legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg — this year‘s recipients of the RBG Leadership Award included, Elon musk, and Rupert Murdoch.

On Monday, it was announced that the invitation-only event set to be held at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. on April 13 has been canceled.
“The last thing we intended was to offend the family and friends of RBG,” Julie Opperman who chairs the Opperman Foundation said. “Our purpose was only to remember her and to honor her leadership. And, while we believe each of the honorees is worthy of our respect for their leadership and their notable contributions, the Foundation has decided that the planned ceremony in April 2024 will be canceled.”
Other honorees included actor Sylvester Stallone, investor and financier Michael Milken, and culinary and decorating maven Martha Stewart.
The inclusion of Musk and Murdoch drew a furious reaction from the late Clinton appointee’s family and supporters.
The late justice’s son Jim Ginsburg told CNN that the choice to honor Musk and Murdoch was “desecration of my mother’s memory.”
“When you think of trying to create a more just society, which of course was Mom’s ultimate goal, those are probably about the last names that would come to mind,” he told the left-wing network’s Paula Reid.
In a statement to the New York Times, Ginsburg’s daughter Jane C. Ginsburg who is a professor of law at Columbia University said that the honorees were “an affront to the memory of our mother.”
“The justice’s family wish to make clear that they do not support using their mother’s name to celebrate this year’s slate of awardees, and that the justice’s family has no affiliation with and does not endorse these awards,” she said.
“This year, the Opperman Foundation has strayed far from the original mission of the award and from what Justice Ginsburg stood for,” RBG’s children and grandchildren said in a statement. “The Justice’s family wish to make clear that they do not support using their mother’s name to celebrate this year’s slate of awardees, and that the Justice’s family has no affiliation with and does not endorse this award.”
Another icon of the far-left, actress Barbara Streisand, also condemned the foundation’s 2024 award recipients, saying that last year she was “proud” to accept the award that was presented to her by Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
“That’s why I join the Ginsburg family in condemning the choice of honorees this year,” Streisand wrote on Instagram. “I had the privilege of meeting Justice Ginsburg on several occasions and I strongly doubt she would approve of these awardees.”
Ginsburg passed away in 2020 at 87 years old after stubbornly refusing to retire despite serious health issues, angering many leftists by dying when former President Donald J. Trump was still in office and allowing him to pick her successor instead of bowing out when Barack Obama was still ruling the roost.
More than any other Supreme Court justice, the former ACLU lawyer who was dubbed “Notorious R.B.G” by admirers had inspired a cultlike following during her life that has persisted years after her death.
One of my oldest friends (we met on the school bus when she was 5 and I was 7) just sent me this RBG doll for Mother’s Day with a note that said I had been a better mother to her than her own was.

“Established in 2020, the RBG Award has previously recognized women of distinction, including HM Queen Elizabeth II and Barbra Streisand. The award was expanded this year to include trailblazing men and women. “Justice Ginsburg fought not only for women but for everyone,” said Julie Opperman, Chair of the Dwight D. Opperman Foundation. ‘Going forward, to embrace the fullness of Justice Ginsburg’s legacy, we honor both women and men who have changed the world by doing what they do best,’” the foundation said in a press release.
The cancellation of the event is yet another example of the intolerance of the modern American left and its contempt for ideas and speech that are not compatible with its ideology.
“I am deeply honored to receive the Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Leadership Award from the Dwight D. Opperman Foundation. This recognition not only reflects my journey in the media and publishing industry but also represents the relentless defense of civil liberties and a commitment to civil discourse that Justice Ginsburg embodied. Her unique ability to maintain friendships and professional relationships across the political spectrum was one of her greatest attributes,” Murdoch said before his name led to the ceremony being called off.
