In the early days of his presidency during the pandemic, President Joe Biden brought concerns about young people’s loneliness to the surgeon general.
Biden questioned how young people could “make love” during the pandemic, according to the Washington Post. Two aides heard Biden use the phrase multiple times in the first year of his presidency. He asked Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to prioritize the problem of loneliness, particularly since Murthy had written a book about it, after speaking with his grandchildren on the topic.
Biden often relies on casual, personal interaction with the public to bring their concerns to his office. Biden uses conversations with fellow churchgoers and his grandchildren to break himself out of the Washington bubble.
The Liberal Washington Post notes in their report that as president, Biden “has access to practically unlimited information,” and refers to his “daily classified briefing from the world’s most powerful intelligence apparatus,” his interaction with world leaders, Cabinet members and other experts.
But Biden relies heavily on interactions with his children and grandchildren, workers on his Delaware property, friends at church, and former colleagues, the Post states.
Special Counsel Robert Hur described Biden in his recent report as “a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”
However, the Post notes that those around Biden don’t entirely agree.
From the Washington Post:
Aides and allies of the president insist that description bears no resemblance to the man they know, saying their jobs would be much easier if it did. In private, they say, Biden swears. He raises his voice. He demands more information. He dresses down aides, on occasion threatening to fire them, though he never does.
Staffers have learned to brace for a particularly fierce barrage from the president on Mondays after he returns from his regular weekend trips to Delaware, as he demands answers to questions from residents of Wilmington or Rehoboth Beach with whom he has chatted.
Here’s another key excerpt from the Washington Post article [emphasis added]:
As vice president, Biden made headlines — and angered Obama aides — by telling a television interviewer that he supported legalizing same-sex marriage at a time when Obama had not yet announced his own support. Aides to Biden say his grandchildren were especially influential in his embrace of that policy, and since then, the grandkids have affected his views on issues such as climate change, which the president has put at the center of his agenda.
NEW: From asking how young people “make love” in the pandemic to talking inflation with his gardener to butt dialing a friend, Joe Biden is shaped by private chats and chance encounters.
