President Joe Biden has faced criticism from the right over his lax immigration policies, which have included prioritizing the resettlement of Afghan refugees within the United States.
Now, one such evacuee from Afghanistan is facing criminal charges in America after he was arrested on suspicion of rape.
“What’s required by law”
According to Fox News, the incident occurred in Missoula, Montana, which is one of the places where refugees were relocated after the recent U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.
The alleged victim claimed that 19-year-old Zabihullah Muhmand asked to go back to her hotel room. Although she said she was not interested in a sexual encounter from the start, the woman accused him of raping her at that location.
Reports indicate she was later spotted in the hotel lobby, visibly upset, at which point she called the police. Upon arrival, officers reportedly found the woman’s bra and socks in Muhmand’s room.
He was taken into custody and placed behind bars at the Missoula County Jail awaiting charges of sexual intercourse without consent, although he has claimed that the encounter was entirely consensual.
U.S. Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) has cited this case as evidence of a botched resettlement effort, asserting: “The fallout and consequences from President Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan continue. While I support assisting our fully-vetted Afghan allies who served alongside our armed forces, President Biden has failed to provide answers as to who has come into the country or if they have been fully vetted according to what’s required by law.”
“Rigorous, multi-layered screening”
Of course, this case is not the first to involve an Afghan refugee being accused of a serious crime after being relocated to the United States.
Among the most notable examples is that of a female soldier at Fort Bliss in New Mexico who claimed that she was assaulted by a group of male Afghan evacuees last month. That incident is currently under investigation by the FBI.
Another alleged crime occurred at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin. In that case, a 20-year-old Afghan refugee was arrested on suspicion of forcibly engaging in a sexual act with a minor. The same military base was the scene of an alleged crime involving a 32-year-old Afghan evacuee arrested on charges that he choked and suffocated his wife.
While critics have accused the Biden administration of not properly vetting Afghan nationals admitted into America, the Department of Homeland Security insisted that all evacuees are subjected to “rigorous, multi-layered screening and vetting processes that involve biometric and biographic screenings conducted by intelligence, law enforcement, and counterterrorism professionals” from various federal agencies.
Of course, many Americans would argue that, in light of the troubling allegations against multiple Afghan evacuees, the government’s screening process is not getting the job done.
