Yesterday, we reported that human remains had been found in the search for Brian Laundrie along with a backpack and notebook belonging to him. Now, the FBI has confirmed that these remains were those of Laundrie.
NBC News reported that the FBI said in a brief statement that dental records showed that the remains were Laundrie’s. A spokesperson for the North Port Police had said earlier in the day that the remains were “skeletal.”
“These items were found in an area that up until recently had been underwater,” Michael McPherson, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Tampa office, said of the remains, the backpack, and the notebook.
Steven Bertolino, an attorney for the Laundrie family, said on Wednesday that Laundrie’s parents helped lead the FBI and North Port police to the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park.
“Chris and Roberta Laundrie were at the reserve earlier today when human remains and some of Brian’s possessions were located in an area where they had initially advised law enforcement that Brian may be,” he said late Wednesday night.
Bertolino added to CNN that night that “the probability is strong that it is Brian’s remains, but we’re going to wait for the forensic results [to] come in and verify that.”
Bertolino has since acknowledged that Laundrie’s parents have been told that their son’s remains have been found.
“Chris and Roberta Laundrie have been informed that the remains found yesterday in the reserve are indeed Brian’s,” he told Fox News. “We have no further comment at this time and we ask that you respect the Laundrie’s privacy at this time.”
Laundrie had been wanted for the murder of his girlfriend Gabby Petito, and he had been missing for over a month. Bertolino told Fox News earlier on Thursday that he personally notified the FBI immediately that Laundrie never returned home from his hike of Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park on September 13.
“We notified the FBI that night or the next morning that Brian didn’t come home from his hike. So, the FBI was aware that Brian didn’t come home from day one,” Bertolino explained.
“Chris confirmed with me just this morning that when him and Roberta looked, I believe it was on the 14th (of September), the whole area was waist deep or higher in water,” Bertolino added. “The FBI confirmed that yesterday that that area until recently had been flooded with water. When that water receded, obviously more things were accessible.”
