President Joe Biden has faced widespread criticism from the right over policies linked to a worsening immigration crisis along the nation’s southern border.
For his part, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has introduced legislation that would require the Biden administration to release undocumented immigrants into affluent areas predominantly populated by Democrats.
“Running on low resources”
He presented the proposed bill on Tuesday, explaining that it would result in waves of migrants being sent to places like Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, in an apparent effort to convince Democrats to face the reality of the border crisis.
The Texas Republican described Democrats as content to pursue an open-borders agenda as long as their own communities remain secure.
“For the past ten months, President Biden and his administration have willingly surrendered the United States’ southern border to dangerous criminal cartels, with no thought given to the South Texas border communities like McAllen and Del Rio, which are running on low resources from dealing with this massive influx of illegal immigrants,” Cruz asserted in a statement announcing the legislation.
The Biden administration — particularly Vice President Kamala Harris — has been accused of essentially ignoring the plight of border agents and ordinary Americans being negatively impacted by the president’s immigration policies.
“That’s why today I am introducing this crucial legislation to alleviate the massive overload at the southern border by establishing new ports of entry in Democrat-led communities such as North Hero, Vermont, where Bernie Sanders spends his summers, and Martha’s Vineyard, where Democrat elites host their cocktail parties,” Cruz added.
“Overwhelmed by the volume”
The apparent disconnect between prominent Democrats and the rest of the nation has been highlighted repeatedly by conservative critics of the current administration.
If successful, the legislation proposed by Cruz could dismantle the Democratic Party’s perceived illusions about the severity of the situation.
Of course, Biden has staked out his position on the issue of immigration and appears unlikely to support any contrary action unless he is forced to do so.
“Local Border Patrol Sectors in Texas continue to be overwhelmed by the volume of illegal aliens at the border,” Cruz went on to explain. “The Texas government has been forced to declare a state of disaster and provide its law enforcement and fiscal resources to address the crisis.”
With record numbers of border crossings reported thus far in Biden’s term, Cruz and others in his party are insisting that Republican-led southern states cannot handle the crisis alone — nor should they.
