On Wednesday morning, Joe Biden’s White House announced plans to roll out coronavirus vaccines for children between the ages of 5 and 11.
The Washington Post reported that White House officials revealed that they have already acquired enough doses to vaccinate every child in that age range. These vaccine doses, which will be specially packaged, are set to be made available at 25,000 pediatricians’ and doctors’ offices, hospitals, pharmacies, community health centers, and school- and community-based clinics.
“Parents know and trust children’s hospitals to be there for their children’s medical needs, and these vaccination efforts will be no different,” the White House said in a statement obtained by Daily Mail. “Pediatricians, pediatric specialists, nurses, and team members will administer the vaccine to kids in trusted, family-friendly settings that serve kids every day.”
Dr. Anthony Fauci said at a press conference that this strategy is crucial in reducing the impact of the virus across the United States. He went on to claim that children are transmitting the Delta variant of COVID-19 as readily as adults.
“If we can get the overwhelming majority of those 28 million children vaccinated, I think that would play a major role in diminishing the spread of infection in the community,” Fauci said. “That’s one of the reasons why we want to do as best as we can to get those children 5 to 11 vaccinated.”
Officials added that this rollout will be similar to previous ones, although it will be tailored to families. Some changes to the rollout that will be made include a focus on administering the vaccines in small-group settings, and the launch of a Parent Leadership Corps of scientists and other experts who are parents themselves and will be available as a resource to other parents.
“COVID has also disrupted our kids lives. It’s made school harder, it’s disrupted their ability to see friends and family, it’s made youth sports more challenging,” U.S. surgeon general Dr. Vivek Murthy told NBC’s TODAY on Wednesday morning. “Getting our kids vaccinated, we have the prospect of protecting them, but also getting all of those activities back that are so important to our children.”
Murthy added that the Biden administration is leaving the question of requirements for schools to local and state officials, but called them “reasonable.”
The White House is moving forward with this despite the fact that children are at a lower risk for complications from COVID-19. They are also ignoring the fact that we have no idea how these vaccine shots will impact the health of children moving forward.
