A 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck the East Coast at approximately 10:23 am on the morning of Friday the 5th. Tremors were felt from Philadelphia to Boston, and New York City received a significant shake. The epicenter of the earthquake was near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, roughly 40 miles from NYC. As of yet, no major damage or injury has been reported, but that makes the experience no less distressing.
It goes to show how close to chaos we could be at any given moment. Glenn recently has been talking about EMPs and man-made apocalypses, but Friday morning’s tremor is a timely reminder that catastrophe could strike from anywhere at any time. Any natural disaster big enough to disrupt supplies, power, or water would wreak havoc on our cities.
It’s up to you to be prepared.
In last Wednesday’s TV special, Glenn recounted the destruction Hurricane Sandy brought to New York City back in 2012. Just to refresh your memory, during Hurricane Sandy and in its aftermath:
- 44 people died.
- 20,000 buildings were damaged and/or were without power for two weeks.
- 800,000 people lost power overall.
- 2 million people without telecommunications.
- 900 million dollars in damages to transportation infrastructure.
