University of Texas at Dallas (UT) will clear out its diversity, equity, and inclusion offices due to state law, according to an announcement from the university.
In an effort to comply with Texas’ SB 17, operations of the Office of Campus Resources and Support (OCRS) will cease.
“As a result, effective April 30, 2024, the Office of Campus Resources and Support (OCRS) and approximately 20 associated jobs will be eliminated,” President Dr. Richard C. Benson announced in a letter posted on the school’s website.
Benson added: “A limited number of functions will be moved to other administrative units to ensure continuity of services to our students, faculty and staff… I know that this decision will not be welcomed by many in our campus community. I remain committed to ensuring that UT Dallas is a supportive community focused on developing the knowledge, the research and the people that are vital to our future.”
The decision was made following pressure from students regarding their adherence to state legislation on UT Austin. UT announced last week that they had terminated numerous employees involved in their DEI programs in accordance with recent state law. According to the Austin American-Statesman, an individual familiar with the matter stated that UT-Austin eliminated 60 positions related to DEI initiatives. However, this doesn’t necessarily equate to 60 individuals being dismissed from the university, as some of these roles may have overlapped with employees’ other responsibilities.
The University of Texas at Austin is removing their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEU) staffers from the campus! All schools should be doing the exact same thing! Some of the professors say it’s cruel to remove the DEI. No, it’s the first step to putting sanity back into… pic.twitter.com/YHMJzJiFXV
