President Joe Biden is contemplating an executive order that would provide amnesty to over 1 million undocumented immigrants who married U.S. citizens but were ineligible for green cards.
The Daily Mail reports Biden is exploring additional measures to address both the southern border crisis and the issue of undocumented immigrants residing in the U.S. ahead of the 2024 election, given that a significant portion of Americans consider this matter their biggest concern.
The Biden administration is seriously considering a “parole in place” program for spouses of U.S. citizens who were initially denied citizenship, according to sources within the White House.
This program aims to address the main reasons for denial, such as repeated illegal entry into the country or past instances of forging legal documentation.
The temporary status under the program would provide immigrants access to work permits and establish a pathway towards citizenship.
“First step in mass amnesty for illegal immigrants incoming,” The Post Millennial’s Libby Emmons lamented on X following the news.
Other users chimed in on Tuesday to voice their frustrations with Biden’s potential amnesty program. “This is a great way to piss off all the Americans who’ve been living apart from their spouses while trying to get them legal visas,” said one user.
The specifics of this potential executive action have yet to be finalized or approved, however, the consideration of employing a significant measure to address another group of immigrants adds to a list of ideas the administration has been contemplating.
The White House has discussed the possibility of timing such an announcement before the election, aiming for a one-two punch following an executive order that is likely to provoke the ire of immigration advocates, according to an official.
The Mail highlights that hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants continue to cross the southern border every month, placing immense strain on states bordering Mexico as they grapple with the crisis in the absence of federal-level action.
The U.S. has witnessed record-breaking levels of illegal immigration during Biden’s presidency. Which prompted House Republicans to pursue impeachment articles against DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas earlier this year, despite the Senate eventually voting to dismiss the articles just last week.
Resist The Mainstream reported that the Senate swiftly rejected both articles of impeachment against Mayorkas in a 51-48 vote last Wednesday, effectively ending the trial that the House triggered with its narrow vote to impeach in February.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott weighed in on the news to ask, “If Sec. Mayorkas will not be held accountable for refusing to follow federal law, why should ANY American be accountable for refusing to follow federal law?”
“The Senate sets a double standard for Americans,” he continued. “You will reap what you sow.”
Colorado Congresswoman Lauren Boebert dubbed the rejected articles of impeachment as “disgusting partisan behavior.”
NPR reported that the articles accused Mayorkas of willfully ignoring the law and breaching the public’s trust.
Democrats labeled the opposition a policy dispute, asserting it did not meet the threshold of “high crimes and misdemeanors” required for impeachment.
Republicans contended that Mayorkas is failing to enforce immigration laws.
