Some friends and family of late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg are unhappy with some of the honorees for the 2024 RBG awards, including Rupert Murdoch, Elon Musk and Martha Stewart.
The awards were originally created to honor women of distinction, but the the Dwight D. Opperman Foundation took over administering them and chose to deviate from the original intent.
Ginsburg’s family said the choice of two conservative billionaires for the awards was “an affront to the memory of our mother and grandmother.”
The foundation will present the awards at a gala at the Library of Congress on April 13.
It has “strayed far from the original mission of the award and from what Justice Ginsburg stood for,” the family’s statement said.
“Going forward, to embrace the fullness of Justice Ginsburg’s legacy, we honor both women and men who have changed the world by doing what they do best,” Opperman said of the awards.
