HNewsWire:
A professor of American Studies at the University of California, Davis, threatened to kill Jewish journalists and their families.
Jemma Decristo, an assistant professor, tweeted a terrifying threat on her social media profile, complete with knife and axe emojis. It also had three droplets of blood in it.
“One group of people we have easy access to in the US is all these zionist journalists who spread propaganda and misinformation,” she said in a statement.
She also threatened journalists’ children.
“They have houses with addresses and kids in school,” she said in an email. “They can fear their bosses, but they should fear us more.” The post was later removed, and her account was made private. Her bio, however, is still visible. She identifies as a “black anarchist dyke thing.”
Decristo wrote to X in another post, “To the US Embassy.” US from everywhere. Return home. “US GO HOME” alog, accompanied by three fire emojis. The message came in response to another image of protestors heading towards the US embassy in Beirut, Lebanon.
In yet another post on X, the professor congratulated himself on the fire at the Israeli embassy in Jordan, responding with “HELL YEAH” and three Palestinian flag emojis. UC Davis issued a statement criticizing the professor’s views while emphasizing that she is still employed there.
“I absolutely condemn the posts attributed to a UC Davis faculty member that recently appeared on the social media platform X,” Gary May, the university’s vice chancellor, said. “I find the comments revolting in every way, and I disagree wholeheartedly with them.”
UC Davis condemns all forms of violence and prejudice as contrary to our university’s principles. We aspire to create an environment of equality and justice that is founded on mutual understanding and respect for all members of the community.
When we receive a complaint alleging that a faculty member has violated the Faculty Code of Conduct, we conduct an investigation in accordance with our established policies and procedures for dealing with faculty discipline. These are confidential personnel matters that we are not allowed to discuss publicly, but we can confirm that the provost will refer this matter to the appropriate campus departments that investigate harassment, discrimination, and faculty conduct in consultation with legal counsel regarding First Amendment rights.
Some have questioned why this academic member is still working at UC Davis. The University of California system has particular mechanisms in place to examine accusations of faculty misconduct in accordance with universitywide rules and bylaws. We are unable to openly comment on the procedures we are taking since the status of complaints submitted against faculty members is secret.
Under the First Amendment, public expression of opinions, including those considered controversial or repugnant, is afforded extensive protection. We are carefully investigating this case to ensure that our action is in accordance with university policy as well as state and federal constitutional safeguards.
Davis University
At the absolute least, UC Davis should contact the police and initiate a criminal inquiry. It is critical for Jewish families in Davis to know that they can sleep well at night without fear of being slaughtered by Professor Decristo.
