With President Biden and former President Donald Trump as the presumptive nominees of their respective parties, Louisiana Republican Senator Bill Cassidy says the race for the White House is “a sorry state of affairs.”
“The best thing going for Donald Trump running for president is that he’s running against [President] Joe Biden, about whom many people also have reservations,” Cassidy told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. “And frankly, that’s why people are considering third parties. So it’s a sorry state of affairs.”
“Neither candidate,” he said, “is actually offering serious solutions” to problems such as the solvency of Social Security. “Neither candidate is offering something which has a snowball’s chance of passing Congress, and yet Social Security will become insolvent in eight years.”

The senator blasted Trump’s “rhetoric” on illegal immigration, saying it “has reflected poorly” on “folks who are coming here illegally,” calling the former president’s comments “dehumanizing.”
“And that’s why, again, many people continue to have reservations,” he stated.
Cassidy also claimed that it would not be “appropriate” for Trump to free the January 6 prisoners who have been charged and convicted, despite mounting evidence that the FBI is perp-walking innocent people.

“We’re a nation of laws,” Cassidy said. “Those folks were convicted. Many times they pled guilty. If you plead guilty … obviously you’re not a patriot.”
“I think that would be a wrong signal if you’re the chief executive, and you’re responsible for enforcing the laws,” he added.
As for whether Trump would abide by the Constitution if re-elected, Cassidy gave a typical politician’s non-answer.
“All I can say is that we have checks and balances within our system, that if any one person attempts to act in an unconstitutional fashion, that they can be theoretically checked,” he said. “I’ll also point out that Joe Biden has acted in an unconstitutional fashion when he attempted to forgive student loans, and it was stopped in the Supreme Court.”

The Senator also refused to say whether he would ultimately endorse Trump in a face-off against Biden, committing only to voting for a Republican in November.
“The answer I’m going to give, the answer I’ve given consistently whenever asked about this on ‘Meet the Press,’ is that I plan to vote for a Republican for the presidency of the United States,” he told moderator Kristen Welker.

That just wasn’t good enough for many outraged X users.
“Disgusting,” replied one.
“You’re a disgrace to this country dude,” stated another.
“Cowards everywhere,” said a third.
Disgusting.

“He’s a Louisiana voter, so it doesn’t matter whether he votes for Trump or not – or whether he even bothers to vote at all,” one dismissive user noted. “These questions are time-wasting garbage.”
