DAYTON, OH – An officer who was shot in the side of the head Tuesday night is now in stable condition, according to reports.
After being shot, the unidentified officer was able to fire back, hitting the suspect multiple times. The suspect is currently at the hospital in critical condition.
Around 6:45 pm, the officer responded to the Dollar General store on Gettysburg Avenue to investigate a report of fraud. Around 7:25 pm, he moved to Ingram Street to search for the suspect. Some type of altercation took place when the officer confronted the suspect, who is identified at this time only as a 39-year-old man.

Interim director and chief of the Dayton Police Department, Matt Carper, said, “The officer used his Taser on the suspect, who went to the ground, retrieved a handgun and fired at least one round at the officer, striking the officer on the side of his head. The officer then returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times.”
The officer was taken to the hospital by another officer, and his injuries are described as non-life-threatening, and later were reported to be a “graze” wound.
“What started out as a fraud call quickly turned into a senseless, violent attack on a police officer,” said Carper.
“We got very lucky last night,” Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley said on Wednesday. “When I got that text across my phone yesterday evening that is very concerning, but we’re very lucky that it was just a graze.
“It is just a reminder of what police go through every single day and the people that work for the city of Dayton that put their lives on the line to protect us every single day too.”
