Daily Caller: President Joe Biden is planning to ask Congress for funding to bring around 95,000 people from Afghanistan to the U.S. in total, The Hill reported. A senior administration official said the funding would be used to help bring 65,000 people by the end of September, and an additional 30,000 people over the course of one year.
The White House informed governors and mayors that the first group of refugees — numbered at around 37,000 — are expected to be resettled in the coming weeks. California will receive the largest number at around 5,300 refugees, and Texas will receive the next largest number at around 4,500, according to State Department data obtained by Axios.
Swing states where Biden beat former President Donald Trump by less than three percentage points are expected to receive at least 1,000 people each, among the first group of refugees being resettled in September, according to State Department numbers.
Arizona, which Biden won by 0.3 points, is expected to receive 1,610 refugees. Georgia, which Biden won by 0.2 points, is expected to receive 1,069 refugees. North Carolina, which Biden won by 1.4 points, is expected to receive 1,169 refugees. Michigan, which Biden won by 2.8 points, is expected to receive 1,280 refugees. The State Department has also outlined several resettlement options for Afghan refugees coming to the U.S. under the SIV program. The department posted a list of 19 cities from which applicants can indicate a preference, either settling near people they know or letting an agency find a location based on the immigrant’s personal information.
