Ohio‘s 2024 Senate hopeful Bernie Moreno was cleared of having an adult website account by the site’s founder Saturday.
Adult Friend Finder founder Andrew Conru debunked an Associated Press report claiming Moreno had an account in 2008. This alleged account claimed to be “looking for young guys to have fun.” The revelation came from a 2016 hack into the site’s data, which Conru apologized for.
Conru posted the following statement on social media:
As the founder and someone who wrote most of the early code of Adult Friend Finder, I want to make a short statement on Ohio senator candidate Bernie Moreno’s alleged 2008 connection to the site.
I reviewed all the available information and it showed that the account had only a single visit, no activity, no profile photo, consistent with a prank or someone just checking out the site. That’s it.
The AP report seeming to claim that the available data proves the account was created in Florida is inaccurate, as location information is manually entered during the signup process. In reality, there appears to be no public geolocation data tied to the account.
It’s important to recognize that even temporary access to an email account is sufficient to create a fake dating profile in someone else’s name.
My sincere apologies to Bernie and anyone similarly affected by the 2016 data incident.

In a follow-up, he added, “Ah, just noticed what people are calling geolocation. In 2008, when someone entered any zip code during signup, we just had a lookup table to map it to latitude and longitude. Geolocation today means to deduce someone’s location based on the browser’s IP address which isn’t the case here. I hope that clarified my response.”

“I looked at a bunch of the press and tried to address things I thought were wrong or misleading. Just felt that I had to at least speak out,” Conru added.

Moreno and his wife have lashed out at his top Republican rival, state Sen. Matt Dolan, over the fake profile that has created such a scandal.
