Dem. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez faces three ethics complaints following Met Gala attendance

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is now facing three ethics complaints for attending the recent Met Gala, Breitbart reports

For those who missed it, Ocasio-Cortez showed up at the exclusive event, where tickets went for $35,000 apiece, wearing a white $10,000 dress that had the words “Tax the Rich” written in red upon it.

Not only has the stunt earned her ethics complaints, but she has also been the subject of criticism, even from her own party, as we shall see.

The latest

Since attending the Met Gala, Ocasio-Cortez has been the subject of three ethics complaints: one from the American Accountability Foundation, one from the National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC), and one from the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trump (FACT). All of the groups essentially alleged the same thing, that Ocasio-Cortez broke House rules by accepting a gift.

In the most recent complaint, FACT writes, “House Rule 25 prohibits a Member from accepting any gift unless the gift is specifically allowed under one of the listed exceptions.”

The group notes that “gift” is defined in “an extremely broad manner,” including a “gratuity, favor, discount, entertainment, hospitality, loan, forbearance, or other item having monetary value.” And, the group further notes that also included would be “gifts of service, training, transportation, lodging, and meals, whether provided in kind, by purchase of a ticket, payment in advance, or reimbursement after the expense has been incurred.”

The group goes on to argue that the $35,000 ticket, the $10,000 dress, the $515 of jewelry that she wore, and the professional hair and makeup Ocasio-Cortez received were all impermissible gifts under House rules.

Whether or not Ocasio-Cortez will face any punishment, though, remains to be seen.

With regards to the dress, it is now being reported that the designer of it, Aurora James, is, in the words of the New York Post, “is a notorious tax deadbeat with unpaid debts dogging her in multiple states.”

“Let’s not lie”

Among those on the left who have criticized Ocasio-Cortez, particularly for the “Tax the Rich” dress, was liberal HBO host Bill Maher. Maher noted that Ocasio-Cortez’s message was misleading, at best, considering that “the richest 65,000 New Yorkers out of 8 million people pay 51 percent of taxes.”

“It’s not like we don’t tax the rich at all,” Maher said. “I’m all for ending income inequality, but let’s not lie. The rich pay a lot of the taxes.”

At the end of the day, Ocasio-Cortez got what was likely exactly what she wanted from all of this: more attention.
