Texas Protecting Babies From Abortion is Nothing Like the Taliban Subjugating Women

There is no comparison between the Texas heartbeat law and the oppression of women and children by the Taliban.

Abortion activists and leftist news commentators have been likening pro-life advocates to the radical Islamic group for weeks, especially after Texas was allowed to enforce its new heartbeat law, which bans abortions once an unborn baby’s heartbeat is detectable, about six weeks of pregnancy.

The problems with this comparison are many. One, pointed out by Kevin D. Williamson, a writer at National Review, is a basic understanding about Islam and abortion.

Compared to Christians and pro-life advocates, “Islamic law is relatively liberal on the question of abortion. The classical view, as I understand it, is that abortion is considered permissible in the first four months of pregnancy,” he wrote.

Williamson referred to an interview in The Guardian, a pro-abortion British news site, with the abortion chain Marie Stopes about its work with the Taliban as further evidence against the comparison. According to the interview:

Councils in Taliban-controlled areas are most likely to justify an abortion based on poverty, said Farhad Javid, country director for Marie Stopes International, the leading post-abortion care provider in Afghanistan. Communities under Taliban influence are often desperately poor and burdened with large numbers of children, Javid said.

Pro-lifers in Texas and other parts of the country are not like the Taliban at all. They believe it is wrong to oppress one human being for the benefit of another. The pro-life movement also knows that the answer to poverty and other suffering is not to kill an unborn baby but to provide support to both mother and child.

Texas pro-life leaders and lawmakers kept this in mind as they worked to pass the heartbeat law and other pro-life legislation. Earlier this year, the state legislature increased support for pregnant and parenting mothers and babiesensuring that they have resources to choose life for their babies. This included $100 million for the state Alternatives to Abortion program as well as additional funding for the Healthy Texas Women program.

A more apt comparison might be between the Taliban and abortion activists. Both apparently believe it is ok to oppress and kill innocent human beings.

And as Williamson noted, abortion is an even greater destroyer of human life than the Taliban.

“As barbaric as the Taliban is, American abortionists will end many more young lives this year than the Taliban will, even if their executioners go to working 24-hour shifts,” he wrote. “The Taliban kills publicly in the name of Allah, while we Americans kill privately, in a clinical setting, in the service of Eros. Hurray for us,” he ended sarcastically.

The pro-life movement is working to save babies’ lives and protect mothers from the pain and regret of abortion. In Texas right now, state pro-life leaders estimate the heartbeat law is saving as many as 100 babies from abortion every day.
