Republicans and Democrats in the Senate are rushing to respond to an uproar over the killing of a 22-year-old Georgia nursing student by an illegal immigrant, but they have very different ideas about what kind of legislation should be passed.
Senate Republicans want to sign on to the House-passed Laken Riley Act, which would require federal authorities to hold illegal immigrants who commit crimes like theft, burglary, larceny or shoplifting in detention until they are deported.
They plan to push for the act to be added to a $1.2 trillion spending package to be considered Friday in order to avert a shutdown.
Democrats, on the other hand, want a bill that directs local authorities to detain illegal immigrants who have committed such crimes until deportation proceedings can be ordered.
Riley’s alleged killer Jose Ibarra was caught shoplifting from a Walmart in Athens, Georgia, near where Riley was killed, among other arrests. He was let go before ICE could catch up to him, however.
Public outcry over the killing has led to a sentiment that if Ibarra had been detained after any of his previous crimes, he would not have been in Georgia to kill Riley.
