President Joe Biden’s chaotic U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan has led to increased calls among Republicans for him to be removed from office.
For his part, Pennsylvania U.S. Senate candidate Sean Parnell weighed in on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks to explain why he believes the president should be impeached.
“It was time to do a battle handover”
Parnell, a veteran who was stationed in Afghanistan during the war, placed the blame squarely on Biden amid the fallout of the recent troop withdrawal.
He was passionate in his depiction of Biden’s mismanagement of the military pullout, insisting that although he personally supported a withdrawal, it should have been carried out with the safety of Americans in mind.
“It’s hard to wrap your mind around, or for me to wrap my mind around, just how bad Joe Biden got this withdrawal,” Parnell asserted. “I have been vocal about the importance of withdrawing from Afghanistan in a responsible way. You know, we’ve been there for 20 years. It was time to do a battle handover with the Afghan National Army, but not the way Joe Biden did it.”
Further criticizing the strategy, he noted that “someone in the Pentagon or the White House thought it was a good idea to pull our military out of the country before we got all of our American citizens, fully vetted allies, who fought an bled, out of that country.”
Parnell concluded that the entire ordeal “is just beyond the pale.”
“An impeachment-worthy offense”
Citing his own experience after spending a year in combat there, Parnell said that the biggest mistake the Biden administration made in Afghanistan was abandoning Bagram airbase, which could have provided easier access for fleeing Americans and allies.
He went so far as to speculate that 13 U.S. service members killed in a terror attack in Kabul might be alive if U.S.-led operations were being conducted out of Bagram.
“No doubt about it that that suicide bomber was let through a Taliban checkpoint,” Parnell declared.
The news continues to get worse, he insisted, pointing to Biden’s authorization of “a drone strike that killed a U.S. aid worker and an entire Afghan family.”
Parnell also referenced a July phone call in which Biden reportedly asked the Afghan president to misrepresent ongoing efforts against the Taliban as successful. Promising to vote in favor of such a measure if he is elected to the Senate, he concluded the situation “is absolutely an impeachment-worthy offense.”
