The White House is working double time to alleviate tensions and prevent the conflict from worsening after Iran’s missile and drone attacks on Israeli territory over the weekend.
On April 13, Saturday, Iran launched more than 120 ballistic missiles and 170 drones toward Israel in retaliation for the killing of several Iranian military officials in an Israeli airstrike that hit Iran’s consulate in Damascus, Syria.
Netanyahu’s government never confirmed accountability behind the strike, although Iran and the Pentagon both attribute the strike to Israel.
Israel, along with the United States, UK, France, and other partners, blocked 99 percent of the strikes. However, a few of the missiles that came through injured a 7-year-old girl and damaged a military base in southern Israel.
The following day, a senior Iranian military official remarked that their attack against Israel was finished. But Iran also warned that any retaliation would lead to a “decisive and much stronger response.”
“Should the Israeli regime make another mistake, Iran’s response will be considerably more severe. It is a conflict between Iran and the rogue Israeli regime, from which the U.S. must stay away,” Iran warned.
Meanwhile, an Israeli military spokesperson remarked that leaders had formulated and “approved operational plans for both offensive and defensive action.”
For President Joe Biden and his officials, any offensive actions Israel would commit will not be supported by the United States.
“We don’t seek a war with Iran. We’re not looking for escalation here,” said White House national security spokesperson John Kirby.
Biden also told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the White House will not back Israel’s retaliatory attacks.
“You got a win. Take the win,” Biden told Netanyahu.
“I’ve just spoken with Prime Minister Netanyahu to reaffirm America’s ironclad commitment to the security of Israel. I told him that Israel demonstrated a remarkable capacity to defend against and defeat even unprecedented attacks, sending a clear message to its foes that they cannot effectively threaten the security of Israel.
But Israel did not commit whether they would heed Biden’s advice.
In another story, the Jerusalem Post exposed that the United States was well aware of Iran’s attack and was informed in advance through diplomatic channels in Turkey.
An anonymous Turkish source remarked that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan discussed this with US and Iranian counterparts, wherein Washington conveyed that the action must be “within certain limits.”
Had the aerial attacks not been prevented, they would have led to massive destruction in Israel.
