The Black Lives Matter Rhode Island chapter is blasting a local Democrat for going too far in her attack on Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.
The controversy began when Sen. Graham announced he had tested positive for COVID, despite being vaccinated.
“I am very glad I was vaccinated because without vaccination I am certain I would not feel as well as I do now. My symptoms would be far worse,” he said. “I feel like I have a sinus infection and at present time I have mild symptoms. I will be quarantining for ten days.”
After Sen. Graham broke the news, top Democratic consultant Kate Coyne-McCoy went on Twitter with comments that landed her in trouble. (Story continues below.)
“It’s wrong to hope he dies from COVID right?” she wrote. “Asking for a friend. #COVIDIsNotOver #LindseyGraham.”
In response, the BLM Rhode Island political action committee responded saying, “Regardless of political affiliation, the disregard for human life is unacceptable and should not be tolerated anywhere within any political party,” according to a report by a journalist and commentator named Ian Donnis.
The group went on to call for her resignation.
“In a time where many human lives have been lost to COVID-19 all across Rhode Island, this comment is extremely distasteful and insensitive,” the group said. “Anything short of an immediate resignation, would signal that these types of comments are acceptable within the RI Democratic Party.”
Coyne-McCoy apologized for her tweet online.
“I made a mistake,” she wrote on Twitter. “I used poor judgement which I obviously regret.”
Whether her apology is too little too late for her career remains to be seen.
