With more than 70 busts on his badge, Monday should have been just one of Officer Jonathan Diller’s usual encounters. However, the 3-year-old police veteran was shot and died after stopping career criminal Guy Rivera and his pal for illegally parking at a bus stop in Far Rockaway.
The suspect, Rivera, has 21 records of previous arrests, with nine felony charges.
According to reports, Diller and a fellow officer approached River’s vehicle and ordered him and his associate to get out. The career criminal refused, which created a commotion. The other passenger opened the door as if complying with the police’s orders. Rivera then fired his gun, and a bullet entered underneath Diller’s bulletproof vest.
Diller was taken to the hospital for immediate treatment, but he was later declared dead. He left behind his wife and one-year-old son.
To express his support and condolences, President Donald Trump plans to attend the police officer’s wake on Thursday at the Massapequa Funeral Home in New York.
According to Trump’s campaign spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, the Republican nominee was invited to attend the funeral.
“President Trump is moved by the invitation to join NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller’s family and colleagues as they deal with his senseless and tragic death.”
Before the invitation, the former president wrote on Truth Social, “Our heartfelt prayers go out to the family of highly decorated NYPD officer Jonathan Diller, whose life was taken by a murderous career criminal yesterday during a traffic stop in Queens.”
“The ‘thug’ in question has 21 prior arrests and just recently got out of prison; he never should have been let back out on the streets. To Officer Diller’s family and all of the other brave men and women of law enforcement who put your lives on the line every day, we love you, we appreciate you, and we will always stand with you!”
On Wednesday, over 1,000 NYPD police officers lined the streets as Diller was transported to the funeral home behind a procession of cruisers and motorcycles.
Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre expressed her condolences to Diller and his family on behalf of the president, but also exploited the officer’s death to harp on the issues of “gun violence” and “gun ownership.”
Old Joe will also be in New York on Thursday but will attend a fund-raiser with former president Barack Obama and former president Bill Clinton. Still, there is no news if the president plans to pay his respects to Diller and his family.
During his term, Trump had a long record of paying respects to the NYPD and police officers. He even called for the death penalty for criminals who murdered law enforcement officials.
‘In my administration, we strongly believe that criminals who murder cops should get the death penalty,’ he said in 2019 during the Major County Sheriffs and Major Cities Chiefs Association Joint Conference in Washington, D.C.
