In a nod to “Weimar America,” Jill Biden ironically claimed during a fundraiser that Berlin was the center of LGBTQ culture before WWII as pro-Palestinian protesters demanded a Gaza ceasefire.
The first lady gave the keynote address at the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Gala held at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles on Saturday.
“Today, this community is under attack. Rights are being stripped away. Freedoms are eroding. More and more state laws are being passed targeting this community,” she disingenuously asserted. “Just last night, we had to fend off more than 50 anti-gay amendments that Republicans tried to force into the government funding bill.”
“These were extreme measures aimed directly at this community – measures that would have limited healthcare, eroded protections for same-sex couples, and more. And they served only one purpose: to spread hate and fear,” Jill Biden divisively contended.
“History teaches us that democracies don’t disappear overnight. They disappear slowly. Subtly. Silently. A book ban. A court decision. A ‘don’t say gay’ law,” she declared.
“Before World War II, I’m told, Berlin was the center of LGBTQ culture in Europe,” Biden intoned, not realizing the rich, dark irony she was invoking.

As Jill Biden pandered to the LGBTQ crowd, five protesters stood up and began yelling, “Free Palestine.” One of them brandished a sign declaring, “Queer Jews Say Ceasefire Now.”
The protesters refused to stop shouting and eventually security removed them from the venue. The first lady fell silent until they were escorted out and then resumed her speech.
The irony is thick here. The protesters supporting Palestinians and Hamas, proclaiming that gay Jews want a ceasefire, don’t seem to realize that being part of the LGBTQ crowd in the Middle East can result in getting you killed. In fact, Israel is the only haven there for them and Hamas is slaughtering Jews every chance they get trying to drive them out of their homeland.
Biden’s speech was announced earlier in the week giving the protesters plenty of time to plan their disruption.

“Earlier in the night, protestors blocked the driveway leading to the hotel’s front entrance on Avenue of the Stars. At one point, some could be heard shouting, ‘Genocide Joe!’” Variety reported. “The evening’s program also includes awards being presented to Jean Smart (“Hacks”) and Sterling K. Brown (‘American Fiction’).”

This isn’t the only protest demanding a Gaza ceasefire that has taken place at a Human Rights Campaign event.
“A similar protest – with celebrities including Sara Ramirez (‘And Just Like That.’) and Indya Moore (‘Pose’) in attendance — was held at HRC’s New York City gala in February. Activists denounced HRC’s ties to weapons manufacturer Northrop Grumman and called on the LGBTQ group to demand a ceasefire in Gaza,” Variety noted.
“The toll on both Israeli and Palestinian civilian lives rises daily. And many in the United States who are Jewish and Muslim recognize that hate-motivated bias and violence will rise here. Antisemitism is wrong. Islamophobia is wrong. Full stop. … [M]any members of our community feel very broken right now. The world is heavy and frightening. And the future is uncertain. This violence is a reminder that the struggle for liberation against extremism, discrimination, and hate is a global struggle. It’s my struggle. It’s your struggle. It’s our struggle,’” HRC president Kelley Robinson said in a statement regarding the ongoing violence in the Middle East just days after the brutal Oct. 7 attack.
The Oscars were also descended upon by pro-Palestinian protesters this month. They made a nuisance of themselves blocking streets and harassing people. It caused the awards to be delayed by about five minutes.
X users seized on Biden’s reference to Berlin and the gay community:
And we all know how that went down. Is she blaming the LGBTQ blah blah blah for the rise of Hitler?
