U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) has faced widespread criticism from within her own party since she voted to impeach then-President Donald Trump in January.
The anti-Trump lawmaker received even more bad news this week with a new poll showing that more than 3 in 4 GOP voters do not want to see her re-elected in next year’s midterms.
“Nancy Pelosi and her new lapdog”
Although the results might look promising to those who want to see her removed from office, polling also signals that she has a chance of winning if the crowded field of contenders is not narrowed. To that end, Trump is actively advocating for some of the five other GOP candidates in the race to drop out.
In a statement released by spokesperson Liz Harrington, Trump declared: “The easiest way to defeat Deplorable Liz Cheney is by having only ONE Conservative candidate run and WIN! Wyoming Patriots will no longer stand for Nancy Pelosi and her new lapdog RINO Liz Cheney!”
Even with a small percentage of the overall Republican vote, Cheney could theoretically win the crowded primary race against a packed field that includes state Rep. Chuck Gray and businessman Darin Smith, among others.
Of course, polling shows that 30% of voters remain undecided, and reducing the size of the primary field would likely help secure Cheney’s defeat.
“An active, aggressive, and unified campaign”
In a head-to-head race, either Smith or Gray would be poised to beat Cheney handily. It remains unclear which of the candidates might receive an endorsement from the former president.
Trump’s approval rating is still quite high among Wyoming Republicans, which explains why many voters do not want Cheney to keep her seat in Congress. A nod from Trump could propel Gray into front-runner status.
In his report, pollster John McLaughlin concluded: “It is very clear that Wyoming voters are looking for solid, conservative Trump supporter Chuck Gray to defeat Liz Cheney for Congress.”
He went on to declare that “voters want an active, aggressive, and unified campaign for Trump supporter Chuck Gray to hold Liz Cheney accountable for her bad vote on impeachment and her current attacks on President Trump on the January 6th committee.
Similar polling showed that Smith would also benefit from a Trump endorsement. For his part, the former president plans to meet with top contenders before making a decision.
