Despite a continuing migrant crisis along the U.S.-Mexico border, the Biden administration faces sharp criticism for not doing enough to provide a solution.
As a result, GOP Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has vowed to take matters into his own hands.
“An ongoing and imminent threat”
According to the Daily Wire, the governor announced this week that members of the Texas National Guard will begin taking individuals who cross the border illegally into custody.
The news came in the form of a letter Abbott sent to Adjutant General of the Texas National Guard Maj. Gen. Tracy R. Norris.
He wrote that National Guard personnel could help the state address various problems the border crisis is causing to the state.
“Beginning on May 31, 2021, I have issued multiple proclamations certifying under Section 418.014 of the Texas Government Code that the surge of individuals unlawfully crossing the Texas-Mexico border poses an ongoing and imminent threat of disaster for certain counties and agencies in the State of Texas,” Abbott wrote.
He stressed that “manpower is needed” to appropriately address the situation, noting that his administration has already deployed Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and National Guard troops to the region.
“Arresting lawbreakers at the border”
“By virtue of the power and authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the State of Texas, I hereby order that the Texas National Guard assist DPS in enforcing Texas law by arresting lawbreakers at the border,” Abbott concluded.
Troops from Florida, South Dakota, and Nebraska have also reportedly been sent to the border to provide assistance.
Abbott’s latest move comes more than a month after he announced plans to arrest undocumented migrants for aggravated trespass and state crimes as they cross the border into Texas.
Last month, he pledged to begin construction on border barriers meant to supplement sections of the wall built under former President Donald Trump.
“Today we are announcing that Texas will build a border wall in our state to help secure our border,” he said on June 16. “My belief, based upon conversations that I’ve already had, is a combination of state land as well as volunteer land will yield hundreds of miles to build a wall in the state of Texas.”
