Gov. Abbott calls in Texas National Guard to assist with ‘arresting lawbreakers at the border’

President Joe Biden has faced widespread criticism over his decision to allow illegal migrants to pour in across America’s southern border. Among his most vocal critics is Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican who recently made clear that he’ll act if Biden won’t.

As the Daily Wire reported, Abbott has ordered the Texas National Guard to assist civilian law enforcement in arresting those who cross the border unlawfully.

Those instructions came on Tuesday in the form of a letter sent to Major General Tracy R. Norris, who serves as adjutant general of the Texas National Guard.

Abbott: “More manpower is needed”

“Beginning on May 31, 2021, I have issued multiple proclamations certifying under Section 418.014 of the Texas Government Code that the surge of individuals unlawfully crossing the Texas–Mexico border poses an ongoing and imminent threat of disaster for certain counties and agencies in the State of Texas,” Abbott told Norris.

“To respond to this disaster and secure the rule of law at our Southern border, more manpower is needed — in addition to the troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and soldiers from the Texas National Guard I have already deployed there — and DPS needs help in arresting those who are violating state law,” the governor explained.

He went on: “By virtue of the power and authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the State of Texas, I hereby order that the Texas National Guard assist DPS in enforcing Texas law by arresting lawbreakers at the border.”

Although Abbott lacks the authority to deport anyone, Fox News reported last month that he was instructing law enforcement to arrest migrants on charges of aggravated trespass and other state crimes.

Texas will build a wall

Abbott has also announced that his state will be building its own barrier at the border to supplement 450 miles of wall that was constructed under former President Donald Trump.

The governor pledged $250 million as a “down payment” on the project, which would be constructed through a combination of state funds and private donations.

“Today we are announcing that Texas will build a border wall in our state to help secure our border,” Abbott said in mid-June, according to Fox.

“My belief, based upon conversations that I’ve already had, is a combination of state land as well as volunteer land will yield hundreds of miles to build a wall in the state of Texas,” the Republican added.

According to a GOP Senate report, the Biden administration is spending roughly $2 billion to cancel plans for further border wall construction.
