Restaurant Delights Customers by Refusing to Pay City Fines for Flying American Flag

The following article, Restaurant Delights Customers by Refusing to Pay City Fines for Flying American Flag, was first published on Flag And Cross.

A restaurant in Illinois has gained the support of its customers by refusing to pay fines levied against them for daring to fly an American flag outside their location.

Terry Trobiani, owner of Gianelli’s restaurant in north Chicago suburban Prairie Grove, Illinois, was ticketed for “improper display” of the American flag after town officials stopped at the establishment.

The restauranteur had added flags to the columns outside his store hung on standard wall mounted poles.

“The next day the village administrator comes in and he gives me a pamphlet of the sign ordinance pertaining to flags. He says you might want to read this,” told Chicago’s Fox 32.

The next thing he knows, Trobiani is being handed the fines.

Trobiani, though, says he will not pay them.

For its part, the village claims that the city ordinance is not about patriotism, but about “safety.”

Prairie Grove village president Doug Underwood claims that the ordinance is meant to make sure flags can’t be “blown off” their poles and onto the windshields of cars traveling the nearby highway.

No, seriously. That is what they are claiming!

“I love the United States flag. I’m a patriot myself,” Underwood told the Fox outlet. “I think it’s disgraceful. Because he’s using the American flag as a tool to further his business interests.”

Not many residents are buying the city’s claims.
