The Washington Examiner reports that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), a self-proclaimed “devout Catholic,” was just admonished by her archbishop over her pro-abortion stance.
The archbishop in question is Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco, California, who works in Pelosi’s congressional district. His rebuke came in response to recent comments Pelosi made in which she tried to claim that one can be both a supporter of abortion and a “devout Catholic.”
Last week, Fox News reported, House committees approved appropriations that, for the first time in decades, eliminated provisions that barred taxpayer money from being used to fund abortions.
Two well-known provisions that were not included in the appropriations bills were the Hyde and Helms Amendments. The Hyde Amendment, with some exceptions, stops taxpayer money from funding abortions in America, while the Helms Amendment stops taxpayer money from funding abortions abroad.
The amendments have been included in spending measures since their inception in the 1970s, enjoying widespread bipartisan support. However, Democrats are trying to do away with them.
At a press conference last Thursday, Pelosi was asked how she squares the concept of being a practicing Catholic while supporting abortion rights — in this case — through the elimination of the Hyde Amendment.
“It’s an issue of health of many women in America, especially those in lower-income situations, and in different states, and it is something that has been a priority for many of us [for] a long time,” Pelosi said. “As a devout Catholic and mother of five in six years, I feel that God blessed my husband and me with our beautiful family.”
The two don’t mix
Cordileone, in response to Pelosi’s statement, released a statement in which he made clear that one cannot be both a “devout Catholic” and an abortion supporter.
“Let me repeat: no one can claim to be a devout Catholic and condone the killing of innocent human life, let alone have the government pay for it,” Cordileone said. “The right to life is a fundamental – the most fundamental – human right, and Catholics do not oppose fundamental human rights.”
In his statement, Cordileone went on to criticize Pelosi for using “the smokescreen of abortion as an issue of health and fairness to poor women.” He called it “the epitome of hypocrisy.”
“What about the health of the baby being killed? What about giving poor women real choice, so they are supported in choosing life?” the archbishop asked. “This would give them fairness and equality to women of means, who can afford to bring a child into the world.”
Cordileone concluded with a direct shot at Pelosi, saying, “It is people of faith who run pro-life crisis pregnancy clinics; they are the only ones who provide poor women life-giving alternatives to having their babies killed in their wombs. I cannot be prouder of my fellow Catholics who are so prominent in providing this vital service. To them I say: you are the ones worthy to call yourselves “‘devout Catholics!’”
