President Biden floats the idea of a 9mm handgun ban

President Joe Biden just announced what could be the next step in his gun control agenda.

The Daily Wire reports Biden as indicating that he wants to eliminate high-capacity weapons, including 9mm pistols.

Biden’s latest gun control push came during the recent CNN town hall event that he participated in. There, Biden was asked how he plans to “address gun violence from a federal point of view to actually bring about change and make our local cities safer?”

Biden launched into a lengthy response of which the following is only a small part.

“The idea you need a weapon that can have the ability to fire 20, 30, 40, 50, 120 shots from that weapon, whether it’s a, whether it’s a 9mm pistol, or whether it’s a rifle, is ridiculous,” Biden said.

“I’m continuing to push to eliminate the sale of those things,” he continued, adding, “but I’m not likely to get that done in the near term.”

The 9mm ban

As Breitbart reports, this is a new one, even for Biden, who has put his support behind some fairly extreme gun control measures.

Biden, in the past, for example, has come out against high-capacity weapons. Biden has said that a “rational policy” would dictate that “you cannot have 20, 30, 40, 50 clips in a weapon. Biden has also said that he wants to ban “clips that have multiple bullets in them.”

Biden has also pushed to have “assault weapons” banned, both legislatively and executively. On the executive side of things, for example, Biden has had the Department of Justice (DOJ) redefine “assault weapons” so as to include AR-pistols, thereby placing them under the umbrella of the National Firearms Act. AR-pistols, though, are 5.56 or .223, not 9mm.

So, this is the first time that Biden has ever mentioned the idea of going after 9mm pistols. And, as Breitbart explains, this could be a gateway.

“Biden’s mention of going after 9mm pistols opens the door to regulating wildly popular Glock, Heckler & Koch, Smith & Wesson, Sig Sauer, Kahr, Taurus, and Springfield Armory pistols, among many others,” the outlet writes.

The only good news at the moment is that, as Biden himself has pointed out, he’s “not likely to get that done in the near term.” But, it’s still something to keep an eye on for the future.
