Few could forget the enormous trouble that became of Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server during her tenure as secretary of state — a move that arguably played a major role in her 2016 loss to former President Donald Trump. Now, another member of the Obama administration seems to be coming face-to-face with a similar scandal.
A new report from Just the News claims that President Joe Biden made use of a private email account while serving as vice president to correspond with his son, Hunter. The report alleged the messages were found on an oft-discussed laptop said to have been abandoned by Hunter Biden at a Delaware computer repair shop.
Just the News reported Tuesday:
Some of the messages from the vice president to his son obtained by Just the News were deeply personal, others were political in nature, and still others clearly addressed business matters, often forwarding information coming from senior officials in the White House, the State Department and other government agencies.
“I saw it”
Biden’s use of a personal email account was reportedly confirmed to Just the News by an unnamed former senior Obama administration official, who also seemed to suggest that use of the account was common knowledge.
“I saw it used to communicate with his family and friends or to pass information to them,” the official, who requested to remain unnamed for fear of potential reprisal, told Just the News.
While there’s no evidence that any classified or sensitive information was shared in the messages, their existence still could prove a quandary for President Biden, whose communications while VP should have been turned over in full to be archived and preserved among federal records.
It remains unclear if that was the case for these messages.
Trouble for Biden?
Tom Fitton, president of the right-leaning government watchdog group Judicial Watch, explained as much to Just the News.
“The Presidential Records Act required Joe Biden to make sure that any of his Gmail account emails, including these emails to Hunter Biden, were forwarded to a government account so they could properly be handled by the National Archives,” Fitton said.
He went on: “No wonder the Obama White House wanted to protect Hillary Clinton from the consequences of [her] email shell game!”
Fitton also vowed to dig further into the recent discovery via Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.
In the meantime, both the White House and Hunter Biden’s attorney, George Mesires, declined to respond to requests for comment from Just the News.
