Eric Clapton Stands by Fans, Won’t Play Venues That Discriminate Against Their Personal Medical Decisions

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson recently decreed that live venues must ask patrons their V-word status. If they refuse or haven’t gotten their “Maxines,” they are unable to enter the venues. Rock legend Eric Clapton tells Boris Johnson he can suck on a Stratocaster. Clapton then made a declaration of his own.

Following the PM’s announcement on Monday the 19th of July 2021 I feel honor-bound to make an announcement of my own,” Clapton said. “I wish to say that I will not perform on any stage where there is a discriminated audience present. Unless there is provision made for all people to attend, I reserve the right to cancel the show.

Before we go any further, it would be a grave injustice for you to not have the guitar riff to “Layla” playing while you read further.

As much as pandemic restrictions have sucked in America, the United Kingdom has been a helpful reminder of why we broke up with them and are never, ever, ever getting back together. Small business owners were harassed by politicians. Churches were shut down. Citizens were fined for being outdoors without a good reason. Americans gave up too many of our rights. The Brits never had the rights to begin with. Now, there is a nationwide mandate that you can’t go places unless you have shots.

I say this as someone who had his shots: That’s absolutely insane. Americans better pay attention to how easily countries are declaring nationwide mandates for what should be a personal medical decision. The Biden administration has already signaled they’ll do the same if they can get away with it. Eric Clapton made that personal medical decision the government wanted him to make, thinking it was the right one. He almost lost the use of his hands over it.

Plus in England, it’s not a matter of either getting your Fauci ouchie OR masking up. If you don’t get the arm jab, you aren’t allowed in.

People should have the right to make medical decisions based on what’s right for them and their families. Yes, even if that decision is “because I don’t want to and f*ck Boris Johnson.” As live acts get back to touring, this is going to become an issue. I wonder how many other artists will have the courage to stand up for their fans like Eric Clapton.
