Report: Swalwell spent ‘tens of thousands of campaign dollars’ on limos, alcohol, hotels

U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) seems to have been caught up in yet another serious scandal.

After having already come under scrutiny for his anti-Trump rhetoric and a prior relationship with a suspected Chinese spy, the California Democrat is now facing questions related to campaign expenditures.

Breakdown of his lavish campaign spending

Specifically, reports indicate he spent “tens of thousands of campaign dollars” this year on alcohol, limos, and swanky hotels.

According to Fox News, Federal Election Commission documents for the second quarter of 2021 revealed lavish spending.

Swalwell’s campaign reportedly spent about $10,000 on more than two dozen rides in limousines and luxury cars. Another $26,000 went to luxury hotel bills — including roughly $20,000 at the Ritz Carlton in Half Moon Bay, where his wife worked until 2019.

More than $7,000 went to meals at luxury restaurants in D.C. and New York, though expenditures for “Catering” could have been directly related to his campaign. Other expenses, including those at wineries, might have legitimate ties to campaign events.

Smaller expenditures included the $566 Swalwell spent on “Food and Beverage” through Drizly, a delivery service focused on alcohol, and $1,151 in a total of seven trips to Capitol Hill Wine and Spirits, a liquor store within walking distance of his D.C. office.

The latest Swalwell scandal

Not only has Swalwell earned harsh criticism from many on the right for his leading role in both botched impeachment efforts against former President Donald Trump, but he is also no stranger to personal scandals.

Last year, his former relationship with apparent Chinese spy Fang Fang came to light, prompting House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to defend the congressman and shelter him from any real consequences, allowing him to remain on the House Intelligence Committee.

His rise in prominence among anti-Trump progressives appears to have coincided with his increasingly extravagant campaign spending, as noted by the New York Post.

In the second quarter of 2019, for example, Swalwell was considerably more frugal with no single item costing his campaign more than $21,000.

It seems he is beginning to enjoy the perks of public office, however, having been recently spotted riding a camel during an expenses-paid trip to Qatar funded by the U.S.-Qatar Business Council to the tune of $84,000.
