The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will test the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in three pilot projects, the department announced Monday.
The department will test AI to help investigations focused on detecting fentanyl and combatting child sexual exploitation, along with tests that will be carried out under Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
FEMA will use AI to help communities plan for and develop mitigation plans to build resilience and minimize risks, while USCIS will use AI to “improve immigration officer training.”

In addition to unveiling three pilot projects, DHS introduced a roadmap outlining principles to govern its implementation of AI initiatives. The roadmap emphasizes DHS’s commitment to ensuring that its use of AI “fully respects” privacy and civil rights. It is thoroughly tested to mitigate bias, privacy risks, and other potential harms. It also urges the agency to promote nationwide efforts for AI safety and security, which includes protecting U.S. cyber networks and critical infrastructure.
Furthermore, according to The Hill, the roadmap emphasizes the importance of DHS taking the lead in fostering “strong cohesive partnerships” with the private sector, local governments, and research institutions.
