Father’s Day weekend in Chicago was marked by horrifying carnage that saw 54 shot, the local ABC 7 reported, including a father of two who was ripped out of his car and executed.
The complete collapse of public order in the city was encapsulated in a gruesome video that shows 24-year-old Gyovanny Arzuaga getting ambushed Saturday night and shot dead at point-blank range in a vicious attack that left his girlfriend fighting for her life.
54 shot in the Windy City
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, police said as many as three men ambushed the couple in Humboldt Park around 9 p.m., on Division Street.
Disturbing video shows a car with a Puerto Rican flag stopped in the street, a woman lying on the ground, and a man, presumably Arzuaga, kneeling over her as a group of men encircling them begin to flee. A gunman points at Arzuaga and shoots, then flees as the victim falls to the ground.
He was later pronounced dead at the hospital from a shot to the head, Newsweek reported. Yasmin Perez, 25, was shot in the neck and is in critical condition, according to Chicago’s Fox 32.
No arrests have been made in the brutal execution, Newsweek notes. The Puerto Rican flag on the victim’s car has led to speculation of a hate crime.
According to Fox 32, Arzuaga had been at a Puerto Rican Day Parade hours before — festivities that coincided with the nation’s first celebrations of Juneteenth as a federal holiday on Saturday.
Weekend of carnage
Although this crime was especially depraved, 21 people were shot overnight Saturday, including a 32-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man who were killed in separate drive-by shootings less than an hour apart early Sunday morning in Bucktown and Humboldt Park, respectively, ABC 7 Chicago reported.
Saturday afternoon, a 31-year-old woman was randomly stabbed to death in the Loop, just a block from the Willis Tower, around 4 p.m., according to WGN 9.
Two additional homicides reportedly occurred on Friday night, bringing the total number of Chicagoans killed over Father’s Day weekend to at least five.
A 31-year-old man was killed in a drive-by shooting in Parkway Gardens around 5:20 p.m., ABC 7 reported. Later, around 7:30 p.m., a 28-year-old woman was shot dead in Back of the Yards. A 15-year-old boy and a 31-year-old man were also injured.
